The Minister of Higher Education and Research Sylvie Retailleau announced Thursday, October 13 in a press release an overhaul of university health services (SSU) with an increase in the salaries of doctors and staff, “especially management positions that are too unattractive”, from 2023. A way to fight against the shortage of personnel. This reform will benefit from a budget of 8.2 million euros for student health. SSUs were in high demand during the Covid-19 health crisis, which revealed shortcomings, particularly in terms of psychological support.

This time, all higher education students, and not just those in universities, “will be able to have access to a medical offer of prevention and care”, according to the press release. University health services thus become student health services (SSE). The idea of the reform is also to have a “territorial approach”, in addition to the national prevention and care offer. For this, this approach will be based on a “study of the health needs of the field”, in collaboration with the regional health agencies (ARS) and the primary health insurance funds (CPAM).
Finally, the SSEs must ensure the protection of the mental health of students and carry out preventive actions around sexual health, the fight against addictions, and nutritional support. “The forthcoming decree will explicitly include” these actions “in the Education Code”, states the press release.
