Level groups in French and mathematics should be set up in college from the start of the 2024 school year. Thursday March 7, Nicole Belloubet, Minister of National Education, announced the relaxation of this measure criticized by the teaching unions.
The creation of level groups in French and mathematics for middle school classes was a flagship measure of Gabriel Attal when he was Minister of National Education. The project had aroused the anger of teaching unions, who point to a risk of sorting students and a lack of resources. Groups set up from the start of the 2024 school year
“They will be done with the possibility of having entire classes at specific times of the year”, indicated the Minister of National Education. This announcement does not satisfy the teachers’ unions who demonstrated on Thursday to denounce a lack of resources in Seine-Saint-Denis. “What we want is the abandonment of this notion”, asks a teacher. Level groups should be set up in 6e and 5e from the start of the 2024 school year.
