The commissioning of new urban radars – planned by the end of March in several French cities – has been postponed indefinitely, according to information from franceinfo Thursday, February 9.
At the beginning of January, the interministerial delegate for road safety, Florence Guillaume, announced in an interview with Parisianthe commissioning of these radars capable of detecting speeding, crossing red lights or even telephones while driving, by the end of the first quarter of 2023, in cities which have already been experimenting with the device since July 2021. Among these cities there are Toulouse, Marseille or Montpellier.
“Lives wasted unnecessarily”, according to the League against road violence
From now on, the Ministry of the Interior declares that“no date has been set”. The government claims to have decided to “extend the test phase to be sure that the devices work properly”. In all, by the end of the year, 300 urban radars were to be deployed throughout France.
According to the League against road violence, this decision is explained by the tense social context currently in France. In question, the pension reform which “paralyzes” the political decision, leading to “unnecessarily wasted lives”. According to the latest road safety figures, 3,260 people died in road accidents last year.
