Floods in Pas-de-Calais: the government is considering creating uninhabitable areas
– ()
At the bedside of the affected residents on Thursday January 4, the Minister of Territorial Cohesion Christophe Béchu raised the possibility of prohibiting the establishment of housing in certain risk areas of Pas-de-Calais.
The figure is edifying. In less than three months, nearly 1,300 homes in Pas-de-Calais were affected by flooding. Faced with this situation, the government plans to create “uninhabitable areas”as indicated by the Minister of Territorial Cohesion Christophe Béchu, at the bedside of the affected residents on Thursday January 4.
An idea that divides
This could be the case for Théo Maillart. This 23-year-old young man saw his house invaded by water, almost a year after his move. From now on, he wants to leave the premises, on condition that the State covers the costs of the buyout. A few hundred meters away, his mother gives a different opinion. “If we sell our house it loses 50% of its value, and then it’s our home, we don’t want to leave.” she confides. In 2010, nearly 1,400 households affected by storm Xynthia, in west-central France, were forced to move. They had been compensated to the tune of 250,000 euros on average per owner.
