To improve the purchasing power of the French, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, says he wants to authorize super-promotions in the food departments up to minus 50%. Concretely, what is it?

Today, promotions in food departments are capped at 34%. They could increase by up to 50%. A measure envisaged to defend purchasing power. In a supermarket, customers are very attentive to promotions, and say they are seduced by this proposal. A promotion that goes from 34% to 50% can make me buy certain products that I wouldn’t necessarily allow myself to buy otherwise, typically meat.“, explains a customer.

In 2018, a promotion at 70% on a spread had created a riot on the shelves. Scenes that had triggered a flagship measure of the law Equalim on food, which had capped rebates to protect the agricultural sector. Now, the context is changing. On the morning of Monday July 4, Bercy announced that price controls on the shelves will be reinforced. Objective : avoid abuse, in a context of high inflation.
