At their lowest in the polls, the conservatives are returning to basics. The British government announced on Monday December 4 a new turn of the screw on legal immigration. The latter increased the minimum wage required to work in the United Kingdom and put an end to family reunification for carers, a few months before the legislative elections.

Rishi Sunak’s government is trying to take a firm line in reducing immigration. All against the backdrop of the promise of “take back control” borders thanks to Brexit. Outside Parliament, Interior Minister James Cleverly promised on Monday “the biggest reduction” never done in terms of net immigration: “300 000 fewer people will be able to come to the UK in the coming years compared to last year”declared the boss of “Home Office”.

Facing MPs, he announced an increase in the minimum salary required to obtain a work visa to 38,700 pounds sterling (45,160 euros), comparable to the median full-time salary, compared to 26,200 pounds currently, an increase of 47% . If they are not affected by this threshold, employees in the health sector will no longer be able to bring their families to the United Kingdom, raising fears from organizations in the sector.
