The juries decided at the Drouant restaurant in Paris. The Goncourt Prize is awarded to Jean-Baptiste Andrea for his book Watch over herTuesday November 7, while the Renaudot prize goes to Ann Scott for The Insolent. THE latest novel by Jean-Baptiste Andrea, Watch over her, depicts the life of an immense Italian sculptor and invites the reader to travel through the 20th century.

Watch over her tells a love story in fascist Italy between a patrician and a plebeian, both of whom love art. With more than 500 pages, this writer from the cinema is the representative, in this finale, of ample fiction and the evocative force of the novel.

“The greatest reward”

In just a handful of years, the writer Jean-Baptiste Andrea has established himself in the French literary landscape by winning the Fnac 2023 novel prize. A poignant story, where it is a question of religion, differences, love impossible, but also of beauty and art. “I see them as challenges and mountains to conquer. They are two heroes who are completely opposed, and that’s what interested me”explains the author to France Télévisions at the end of October. “One of the characters in this novel is a mysterious statue”he reveals.

The literary prizes represent recognition for him. “It means that I have become a writer, and that, for me, is the greatest reward”he rejoices.
