(Los Angeles) The Golden Globes announced Monday that they had reached an agreement with CBS which provides for their broadcast for five years on this American channel, a sign of recovery for a ceremony which has gone through an existential crisis in recent years.
CBS thus agrees to host this convalescent event in the long term, which attempts to make people forget accusations of corruption and racism, after having broadcast it occasionally in January.
“We are very proud to be able to continue to rely on CBS for the broadcast of the Golden Globes,” said Jay Penske, one of the new directors of the ceremony.
“CBS stood up for the Globes during a very difficult time and understood their value,” he added.
Long seen as a vital stepping stone to the Oscars, the Golden Globes were previously broadcast on NBC.
But faced with the scandals which undermined the organization of the ceremony, the channel interrupted its partnership.
In 2021, the Los Angeles Times revealed that the Golden Globes jury had no black members and that its members accepted lavish gifts from the studios.
Enough to provoke a vast crisis: the very existence of the event and its relevance for Hollywood have seemed threatened in recent years.
To make people forget these scandals, the Golden Globes were bought by a group of private investors and the association which constituted their jury was dissolved. Reforms have been put in place to improve the ethics of voters and increase their diversity.
After completely boycotting the ceremony in 2022, Hollywood has shown that it is ready to give up. Despite a few notable absentees, the 2023 and 2024 editions of the Golden Globes were full of stars, including Steven Spielberg, Michelle Yeoh and Margot Robbie.
CBS was probably also convinced by the encouraging rebound in their audience: boosted by the presence of blockbusters Oppenheimer And barbiethe last ceremony attracted 9.4 million viewers, after the historic low of 6.3 million viewers in 2023.
As part of the new agreement with the network, the Golden Globes will also be broadcast on the Paramount+ streaming platform.
