Despite international condemnations and calls for a ceasefire, Israel continues its bombing of Rafah, a town located in the Gaza Strip. Frédéric Encel, doctor in geopolitics and lecturer at Sciences Po Paris, provides his insight in France Info’s 19/20.
Frédéric Encel, doctor in geopolitics and lecturer at Sciences Po Paris, is categorical. According to him, “the general staff, the government and the population of Israel wish for the total military destruction of Hamas.” Two days after the bombing of Rafah, the government of Israel continues its war by continuing to bomb the city of Rafah, despite international condemnations and calls for a ceasefire. But this war cannot mean eradication, according to Frédéric Encel, who explains that, “When Netanyahu talks about eradication, he is thinking magically. We cannot eradicate a movement that is political, religious, social, military and terrorist.”
“On the other hand, what is possible is to destroy most of its critical mass on a military level and that is what the government [d’Israël] is doing”, shade Frédéric Encel. However, Israel’s war against Hamas is not unanimous, including among Israeli residents. “After the massacre of October 7, this general staff decided to follow a government which is decried by more than three quarters of Israeli citizens who hold Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for the catastrophe of October 7”believes Frédéric Encel.
