There will no longer be a prize for best female and male leading role at Gemini. The ceremony is abandoning gender divisions in favor of non-gendered categories, the Academy announced on Monday.
This change, which concerns the interpretation trophies awarded on television (leading roles and supporting roles), is effective now and will affect the 38e gala, which will air next year. The categories affected may contain up to eight finalists each, to “allow more artists, regardless of their genre, to shine,” said the Academy – Quebec section, through a press release.
This measure is part of an update to the Gemini Awards regulations, which will reduce the total number of categories to 88. This fall, the number was 139. According to the Academy, this overhaul stems from a reflection started in 2021.
More details to come.
