The French are not the only ones to be won over by the mythical places and picture-postcard landscapes that the Games events have to offer. Abroad, the media are also praising the City of Lights.
Paris is a celebration whose clamour resonates all around the planet. From foreign journalists to athletes, all are won over by the mythical places of these Olympic Games. Even the British, who hosted the London Games in 2012, have difficulty admitting that Paris is “to die for“. A sumptuous setting and happy French people: a fact so rare that several foreign media outlets have fun highlighting it. In the United States, the Wall Street Journal headlines: “The biggest surprise of the Olympics: even the French find no reason to complain“. “The Gallic supporters, known for their snobbery, have finally learned to relax“, they continued.
Across the Channel, the BBC is making fun of the explosions of joy from the French commentators. But the French and foreign media agree that Léon Marchand is the hero of these Olympic Games. His performances have even dazzled Australia, the Olympic swimming ground. Enthusiasm is more moderate in Russia, which is particularly critical of the water in the Seine. If the bet was to make an impression abroad, the mission is accomplished.
