One wonders what Jean Charest, former Minister of the Environment, at the head of the Conservative Party of Canada, would do, where we are even unable to recognize the existence of a climate crisis. It’s good to give an image of moderation and pre-election respectability to a party where a quarter of the voters rather support a populist candidate, but how then to subdue the most vocal part of its base, which turns out to be opposed to any environmental strategy and obsessed with the issue of abortion and the right to arms? Barring a split that would push this cumbersome faction towards a new party or that of Maxime Bernier, Mr. Charest is embarking on a strange mess.
