The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has finally come to an agreement with Ivanhoé Cambridge regarding the expropriation of land on the Galeries d’Anjou site in order to build a blue metro line station there.
In 2020, the STM had sent a notice of expropriation to Cadillac Fairview and Ivanhoé Cambridge, then owners of the Galeries d’Anjou. The transport company requisitioned 70,000 square meters of land for the construction of a terminus as part of the blue line extension project. The owners then went to court to challenge the notice.
However, the legal proceedings were suspended when in 2021 Cadillac Fairview sold its share in the Galeries d’Anjou property to Ivanhoé Cambridge.
An over-the-counter agreement was finally reached between the STM and Ivanhoé Cambridge to determine the perimeter of the expropriation that will allow the construction of the future metro station, as well as a kiosk for the bus station.
“The two organizations thus mark the beginning of a period of fruitful collaboration, to the benefit of both entities, and agree on the vital importance of the extension of the blue line to promote an attractive and diversified commercial offer for residents of the east de Montréal,” the two partners said in a joint press release.
On Thursday, the STM was unable to specify the area covered by the operation. However, she specified that two businesses will have to be relocated.
Under the agreement reached, the lots will be transferred in March 2024. It should be noted that the commissioning of the extension of the blue line is scheduled for the fall of 2029 and the cost of the project should reach $6.4 billion.
“Excellent news for the extension of the blue line! commented Mayor Valérie Plante on Twitter.
