The G7 had chosen the highly symbolic date of May 8 to hold a meeting by videoconference, in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated. The leaders pledged to phase out imports of Russian oil.

Ukraine is not among the world’s seven largest powers, but its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was the special guest at the G7 meeting. Today’s goal was to further weaken Russia by depriving the Kremlin of the revenue it uses to finance the war. The States thus undertake to gradually stop imports of Russian oil. “This materializes the fact that Ukraine, the Ukrainian government functions, exists, has state-to-state relations […]. This is the great problem of the Russians: the Ukrainians did not give in“, analyzes Peer de Jong, specialist in geopolitics at the Themiis Institute.

This May 8, Ukraine saw personalities from all over the world parade in kyiv. The Croatian Prime Minister was followed by the President of the Bundestag, the German Assembly. Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, was on a surprise visit to Irpin.
