The final touch almost tastes bitter for Les Bleues. The French fencing team ended its Worlds with a defeat in the team women’s saber final against Hungary (45-30), Saturday July 23. But, on balance, the Blues can consider themselves very happy with this Egyptian campaign. They leave Cairo with eight medals including four gold for Enzo Lefort (foil), Romain Cannone (epee), Ysaora Thibus (foil) and the men’s epee team.
The sabreuses were aiming for a fifth charm of the finest of metals but, despite a good comeback at the end, they bowed against the overexcited Hungarians. Olympic vice-champions and reigning European champions, Les Bleues, made up of Sara Balzer, Sarah Noutcha, Anne Poupinet and Caroline Queroli, will therefore have to settle for silver.

Defeated by the American defending champions in the semi-finals, the French foil fencers rallied to win the bronze medal at the expense of Japan, largely dominated (45-30). Led by the brand new world champion Enzo Lefort, and by an inexperienced but promising trio composed of Pierre Loisel, Maximilien Chastanet and Alexandre Sido, the Blues have always raced in the lead to finish on a final touch from Enzo Lefort, the one of the great men of these Worlds who will have seen France confirm its return to the dominant nations of fencing.
