The French pentiti status, which came into force in 2014 but is little used, will be reformed “by the end of the year” 2023, indicated Tuesday, May 9 the Minister of Justice, Eric Dupond-Moretti, to the National Assembly. “I am announcing that by the end of the year, a text will be ready on this question of repentants”he said during the session of questions to the government. “I went to Italy about ten days ago to be inspired by what they do”added the minister, who answered a question from Paul-André Colombani, deputy (Liot) of Corse-du-Sud.

This reform, which should take the form of a “Law proposition”aims “to improve efficiency” repentant status, “which has the merit of existing but is little used”the ministry said.

A new identity and police protection

Created in 2004 by the Perben law, but only in force since March 2014, this exceptional system makes it possible to offer a member of organized crime, now repentant, a new identity, police protection, financial assistance – which decreases in over time – and exemptions or sentence reductions in court.

Imported from Italy and the United States, it opened a breach in the omerta which reigns over organized crime but the text remained halfway, in the opinion of several experts, by excluding the authors or the accomplices of assassination.
