The French electoral campaign seen from Germany

For the German journalist Kai Littmann, editor-in-chief of eurojournalist.eu, the electoral campaign for the presidential election of 2022 is little followed in Germany, the Russian-Ukrainian war mobilizing enormously the German news.

Also across the Rhine, the weakness of meaningless political slogans in this French campaign is the opposite of what the Germans experienced during the last election which was to mark the end of the Merkel era. Moreover, the last elections in Germany saw a very high turnout. So, for our German neighbors, who will come to lead France? The question remains unresolved, with some apprehension.

For Kai Littmann, the Franco-German couple is more insignificant today in the face of the Ukrainian crisis, it would experience a certain loss of confidence on the German side, because the softness of the new German government appears without a clear line of governance for the time being, as well , the Franco-German couple would be set aside by German voters.

As to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the very serious German daily, it would have shown, according to Kai Littmann, that the French campaign is made up of a certain number of “authoritarian” candidates, and that France would mark a certain shift when 72% of French voters would be ready to vote for an “authoritarian” candidate, the exact opposite of Germany. German voters also show a certain lack of interest in what is happening outside Germany.

If for Kai Littmann, the Germans do not expect much from the French presidential elections, following them only very little, one would note, both in France and in Germany, a rather navel-gazing attitude on the part of the voters, preferring the national and European affairs, which would be very bad for the European Union.

Kaï Littman notes that Europe today is lacking, without a Europe of health, a Europe of defense and a political Europe, “people see that Europe does not work in its current form”.
