Due to the rise in food prices, more and more French people are taking up gardening and cultivating their vegetable patch. A solution to eat healthier while saving money. Report in Antibes, in the Alpes-Maritimes.

In Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), it’s a morning of planting for Patricia. She gardens twice a week, for pleasure and to save money. “There is more than one euro saved, even 1.50 euros, if you take into account that the salad is 1.70 euros in some places”, she notes. In this social garden, the gardeners share their harvests. There are butternut squash, tomatoes or eggplant.

“At the Provençal market, these tomatoes are worth seven euros per kilo. Eggplants are three or four euros per kilo. It’s worth it”, says a woman. While on the stalls, the price of fruit and vegetables has increased by 11% in one year, some French people are getting back to gardening. The trend, born during the confinements, is confirmed to fight against inflation. “People are gardening more and more, with tomatoes, the safe bet, and zucchini”, confides Bruno Thirion, head of the vegetable sector in Villaverde Antibes. The garden center claims that the price of seedlings has remained stable over the past few years.
