Infoxes targeting France abound on social networks in West Africa. Among them: several publications supposed to prove links between the French army and terrorism in Niger, but which are in reality decontextualized images.
Since the jihadist ambush of February 10 which killed at least 17 Nigerien soldiers near Tillabéry (Niger), anti-France rumors have been circulating even more in West Africa. Because if Mali and Burkina Faso have requested the departure of French forces, Niamey maintains its security cooperation with Paris.
Two accounts try to discredit the French army by claiming that it actually collaborates with the jihadists present in the so-called “three borders” area between Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali.
The first hijacks a 2019 report with French paratroopers, which he misinterprets as recent supplies by France to armed terrorist groups in the region. The second hijacks photos of a fire in a Nigerian market. He claims that they represent a French bombardment to cover up collaboration with the jihadists: an attack that never took place.
