Expenditures linked to digital subscriptions by the French have increased by 22% in two years according to a study by BearingPoint, France Inter reported on Tuesday May 28. The budget for seeing films or listening to music on platforms has never been higher. Each household spends on average 45 euros per month on Spotify, Amazon Prime or Canal+.
Several causes explain this increase. First of all, the increase in the price of these subscriptions as for Disney+ and Deezer, but also the account sharing restrictions, particularly on Netflix.
These subscriptions are anchored in the consumption habits of the French. Even if they increase, users keep them. “Many of these services are consumed every day, even several times a day. We have a form of use value which is beyond the actual cost of these services and above all much more economical than any competing leisure service “says Nicolas Reffait, partner, in charge of the development of the Media and Entertainment divisions at BearingPoint.
Recently, Spotify announced to its users an increase in the price of the Spotify Premium subscription to 11-12 euros per month “to cover the additional costs of a new tax on music streaming services imposed on us by the French government”, defended the Swedish firm. These large platforms walk on a ridge line. Excessive increases in the future could this time lead to a drop in the number of customers.
Furthermore, press subscriptions increased by 16% in one year. This is the first time since the creation of this study, four years ago, that an increase has been noted. It is explained by a transition in subscriptions from the paper press to digital, but also by the weight of the news and the quality of its processing. Both the national press and the regional daily press are affected by this increase.
