The French Alps in the home stretch. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to enter, on Wednesday November 29, into a “targeted dialogue”, with France for the 2030 Games, while members of the IOC Executive Board are in Paris until Friday. After a campaign carried out at full speed and a file put together in a few weeks, and submitted on November 7, France is taking a big step towards organizing the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030.

“What emerged from the French Alps candidacy […] it is the experience for the athletes, the alignment with regional and national socio-economic development. The application must be given time to optimize the athlete experience and to continue to build public and athlete support.”explained Karl Stoss, president of the Commission designating the future host of the 2030 Games to justify the preference given to the French candidacy.

This announcement from the IOC, although favorable, is not yet an official designation. For this, we will have to wait until the summer of 2024, just before the start of the Paris Games, to officially know the future host country. The Alps’ candidacy has six months to refine its project, both from a financial and organizational point of view. But the fact of being the only one to enter into “targeted dialogue” almost ensures that France will win.

The first deadline is set for March 2024. “All guarantees” are expected on this date, before the site visit, scheduled for April. “There is an excellent basis. France must be recognized for its ability to organize major events. It must still do its homework by March. If the candidacy has been accepted, it is because we have full confidence in the ability of the French system to provide these guarantees”explained Christophe Dubi, executive director of the Olympic Games.

Swedish and Swiss applications rejected

The positive points of the French Alps candidacy are the promise of tourism respecting sustainable development in the region, the presence of a maximum of sites, in addition to the structures and experience of Paris 2024., specified Karl Stoss. At the same time, the IOC announced that it was entering into a targeted dialogue with Salt Lake City (United States) for the 2034 edition. Excluded from this phase of dialogue, Sweden, already an unsuccessful candidate for the 2026 Olympics, sees its Olympic dream disappear once again. Switzerland is in pole position for the 2038 edition.

The tricolor project revolves around different places, and above all installations, almost all of which already exist. In detail, in the city of Nice and its surroundings, we will find an Olympic village (one in each pole), the main media center, a majority of ice disciplines (figure skating, short-track, curling, hockey) but also the skicross and snowboardcross events, in the Isola 2000 resort. A little further north, in Briançonnais, the Serre Chevalier resort will host a good part of the freestyle (snowboarding and skiing), while the skiing and snow half- pipe will be held in particular in Montgenèvre.

For its part, Savoie will welcome all alpine skiing with a return to Courchevel-Méribel, theater of the 2023 World Championships, where the famous Eclipse (men) and Roc de Fer (women) slopes will once again be available. honor. The slaloms will also be contested in Val d’Isère, on the Bellevarde face, regularly on the men’s World Cup program. Finally, while bobsleigh, skeleton and luge will compete in the only French bob stadium in La Plagne, Nordic skiing will take place in Haute-Savoie, very close to Annecy, in Grand Bornand (biathlon) and in La Clusaz (cross-country skiing and Nordic skiing). Finally, the springboard built for the Albertville Olympics, in Courchevel, will be reused for ski jumping.
