The Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, believes that the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) should negotiate with the web giants so that there is a minimum percentage of content in French and promote their discoverability.
“I would like all the countries of the French-speaking world to come together, that we give a mandate to the OIF to meet with those responsible for the major digital platforms to demand that there be a certain cultural diversity,” a- he declared, Saturday, in Paris, during a round table on the second day of the Francophonie Summit.
According to him, it would be reasonable, for example, for the popular platforms Spotify and Netflix to produce “say 30%” of content in French.
Mr. Legault also wants the cultural content put forward by the platforms not only to be in English, which is often referred to as “discoverability”.
Discussions are underway, says Trudeau
A few hours earlier, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, declared, during a press conference on the sidelines of the same summit, that French-speaking leaders must find ways to make French “shine” in the country. digital age.
“We are therefore in discussions with the web giants,” he confirmed. We are in discussions with our partners across the French-speaking world, including France, to be able to further promote the presence of French online. »
Mr. Trudeau said he had “an awful lot” of conversations in recent weeks about artificial intelligence (AI) in French.
“In Canada and France, we are developing AI which will not simply be translated into French, but which will be developed with French, with French-speaking sensitivity,” he noted.
The Francophonie Summit takes place every two years and gives French-speaking countries the opportunity to discuss how to promote their common language while strengthening their ties.
