France Télévisions and 13 other media are launching a call with Reporters sans Frontières to release reporter Mortaza Behboudi, who has been detained in Kabul for a month. Accused of espionage by the Taliban, he is actually a respected journalist who has worked for years for various media including France Télévisions.
Reporter Mortaza Behboudi is now in prison in Afghanistan. A year and a half ago, the Taliban returned to power. The Franco-Afghan journalist has traveled twenty times to his native country. On January 5, he returned to Kabul (Afghanistan) and requested filming authorization from the authorities. He was arrested by a Taliban patrol before he could retrieve the documents.
Accused of spying by the Taliban
He was taken to a police station in the capital, where he stayed for ten days. He was then transferred without any explanation, accused of espionage. He would still be in a prison in the ministry district to this day. Aleksandra Mostovaja, his wife, was able to talk to him on the phone. “I spoke to him only once, for a minute. (…) It was ten days ago. He told me he was fine, but I had the impression that he was on the verge of tears”she reports.
France Télévisions has produced numerous reports in Afghanistan with Mortaza Behboudi, who has also collaborated with Arte, Mediapart and even Liberation. For Reporters Without Borders, his imprisonment is unacceptable. A mobilization is organized on social networks.
