Iceland: fourth volcanic eruption in four months shakes the country

A new eruption shakes Iceland. Monday March 18, the lava continued to advance towards a town in the South. The authorities declared a state of emergency.
On the weekend of March 16 and 17, Iceland experienced its fourth volcanic eruption in three months, the most powerful. 36 hours after the first jets of molten rock, the lava continues to advance slowly but surely. “If it continues like this, it risks sinking down the hill, which could cause it to accelerate and reach the road at an even faster speed.“, explains Jon Haukur Steingrimsson, geotechnical engineer.
A spa resort evacuated
The flow continues its course slowly enough for scientists to take samples. The risk: the rupture of a lava field, which could cause new flows. Nearby, the Blue Lagoon spa resort was urgently evacuated overnight from Saturday to Sunday. In January, houses in the neighboring town were destroyed by lava. The village of Grindavik, threatened by new volcanic activity in the region, seems destined to become a ghost town.
