Isabelle Rome, the former Minister Delegate in charge of Equality between Women and Men, Diversity and Equal Opportunities, expresses her “great emotion” Monday March 4 on franceinfo, while Parliament approved the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution.
According to her, the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution is “a pride for France because we are the first country”, “a pride at a time when the world is very gloomy and it is also a light, a hope for all women”.
Regarding the omission of Gabriel Attal to cite the deputy Mathilde Panot and the senator Mélanie Vogel who opened the legislative path in the Assembly and the Senate, she declares “that we must pay tribute to all the women who fought, I salute them, we must work in this spirit, I know how all these parliamentarians, these representatives of associations fight on a daily basis.”
“We must provide the means for this fundamental freedom”
In his speech, the Prime Minister also said that “the freedom to abort remains in danger, at the mercy of those who decide”. To this, Isabelle Rome specifies that it is necessary “remain vigilant, the threats could be those brought by lawless, anti-choice currents which are currently in the minority, but we must ensure that they do not develop.”
Regarding the repeal of the double conscience clause for doctors who do not wish to perform abortion, the former minister believes that “perhaps the French people are not ready for this arrangement, we have a great victory this evening, but let’s remain vigilant, and if we see dangers looming it will be the time to reconsider certain decisions and ‘go even further’. She also adds that“we must provide the means for this fundamental freedom” and especially “that there is good distribution across the territory is an objective that public authorities must have”.
