Update
The shoes will soon be rated based on their environmental footprint. Some manufacturers have already taken the lead.
In one of the stores of the Eram shoe brand, the shoes on sale display transparency. Some have indeed an ecological note. Thanks to a QR code, customers can find out the carbon footprint of their shoes. Origin of the leather, country of manufacture: several information is made available to buyers.
Certain pairs made in Asia thus have heavier balances than others, with carbon footprints of 14.44 kg of CO2, for example. “Between 4 and 14 kg, there is still a delta, so it’s really a way to promote French manufacturing”, says Didier Terrien, manager of the Eram store. This rating is rather well received by the majority of customers but for some, the price and the style are more important than the carbon footprint. If the brand has implemented this system, it is because 18% of its shoes are labeled “eco-responsible”. Some are made in Angers (Maine-et-Loire); the assurance of a better carbon footprint.
