(Washington) The five Americans released by Iran, as part of an agreement facilitated by the release of $6 billion in frozen oil revenues, arrived in the United States on Tuesday, an American official told AFP .
The five ex-detainees landed on a military base near Washington, according to this source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“Welcome home,” reacted Jake Sullivan, Joe Biden’s national security advisor, on to the United States.
The ex-American prisoners, including one who had been detained for eight years, and two members of their family, left Tehran on Monday morning aboard a Qatari flight for Doha where they made a stopover before taking off again, on board this time from an American plane, for the United States.
A transfer of Iranian funds frozen in South Korea, amounting to six billion dollars, was also announced in Doha, Qatar having been one of the mediators of the agreement, and confirmed by Iran.
This arrangement was announced on August 10 and the five Americans of Iranian origin, detained in Iran, were then transferred in August from their prison to be placed under house arrest.
