The first inspections carried out this week by the Swedish authorities at the site of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipeline leaks in the Baltic Sea “reinforce suspicions of sabotage”announced the Swedish public prosecutor’s office in charge of the case on Thursday, October 6.
“We can see that there have been detonations near Nord Stream 1 and 2 in the Swedish exclusive economic zone, which have caused extensive damage to the gas pipelines”, said the special prosecutor in charge of the investigation on the Swedish side in a press release. “Crime scene inspections have reinforced suspicions of aggravated sabotage. Seizures have been made at the scene which will be investigated,” he added.
Objects of geopolitical arm wrestling in recent months, pipelines and their leaks are currently at the center of the attention of several States wishing to investigate these still unsolved incidents. Russia, owner of the gas pipelines, sent a team on Saturday October 1, like Sweden and Denmark, which saw the leaks occur in their territorial waters. Germany and Poland, concerned by the energy issues linked to gas pipelines, also wish to take part in the investigations.
