At the start of summer, many holidaymakers are stopping on the side of the motorways in the south of France to stock up on fruit. A tradition that makes life easier for producers and consumers alike, particularly on the N7 in the Rhône Valley.

Departures and returns are pouring onto the roads on Friday, July 12. But despite the changeable weather, we find the flavors of summer when we leave the main roads. Roadside fruit stalls are a tradition in the Rhone Valley. “We came off the highway to buy our fruit”explains a customer. “We always stop here when we go down south, both on the way there and back.”adds a man.

For Sandrine Costet, direct sales in summer are a way to increase production more quickly: “We collect (…) and in the afternoon, it is sold, so there are no losses”confides the fruit producer. On the edge of the national road 7, Pascal Rochegüe’s stand is particularly popular. His family has been selling its produce on the side of the road for two generations. The fruit grower moves from his 9 hectares of orchard to the stalls. These summer sales represent 70% of his farm’s turnover.
