A big first for Miami. The city of Florida will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time in its history from May 6 to 8, 2022, organizers said in a statement Thursday. “Circuit construction is progressing according to expectations and now that our date has been confirmed by Formula 1, we can quickly continue with revealing more details about the experience that will be experienced at the track side.”, commented GP CEO Richard Cregan.
The Miami GP will take place in Miami Gardens, some thirty kilometers north of iconic Miami Beach. The circuit is built around Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins American football team (whose CEO Tom Garfinkel is the promoter of the GP) and the Miami Open tennis tournament. The United States has already hosted a GP in Austin, Texas (October 24 this year) since 2012, but F1 is looking to gain a foothold in the land of IndyCar and NASCAR.

Miami will be the 11th destination to host F1 in the country, after Riverside, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Long Beach, Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix, Indianapolis and Austin. According to provisional versions of the 2022 calendar published in specialized media, 23 races (a record number) would be on the program for the 2022 season, between Bahrain at the end of March and Abu Dhabi at the end of November.
In addition, the Monaco GP, in May, will take place over three days instead of four (from Friday to Sunday rather than from Thursday), announced Wednesday the president of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali. The GP of France should a priori be held in mid-July on the Paul Ricard circuit in Le Castellet. This calendar will be formalized at the World Motor Sport Council on October 15.
