The first “Legacy” awards will be presented in Toronto

The Afro-Canadian Awards Gala will be held at the History Theater in Toronto and will air on September 25 on CBC and its online platform Gem.

The Black Academy says the 90-minute live show, in partnership with Insight Productions, will include onstage performances, tributes to established and emerging Black Canadian talent, and award shows in categories including film. , television, music and sport.

The Toronto-based Black Academy was founded in 2020 by actor brothers Shamier Anderson and Stephan James to support black talent and break down barriers of discrimination.

Last May, the organization announced a three-year partnership with the CBC to broadcast the awards.

Shamier Anderson said he wanted viewers to recognize and appreciate black talent in Canada and be inspired by the finalists.

“When Stephan and I thought of a name for the awards show (the ‘Legacy’), we really wanted it to convey something big and lasting — it’s about creating a legacy for this generation. and future generations of Black Canadians,” Anderson said in a statement Thursday.

Details regarding award categories, membership and the submission process will be announced at a later date.

In Quebec, the “Dynasty” gala has been rewarding black personalities in the cultural sector since 2017, at the end of the festivities surrounding Black History Month in March.
