The UN Security Council is due to meet on Friday, March 25, from 19 GMT hours (20 hours in Paris), the day after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Pyongyang has fired Thursday in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Maritime Zone.
The United Nations, through the voice of Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman, has “sentenced” Thursday “with force” this shot, prompting the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Albania, Ireland and Norway to request a meeting of the Security Council.
“The launch of a long-range missile runs the risk of a significant escalation of tensions in the region. The Secretary-General urges the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea not to take further counterproductive actions”, warned the spokesperson for Antonio Guterres. The UN Secretary General “reaffirms its commitment to work with all parties to seek a peaceful and diplomatic solution towards the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula”added his spokesperson.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had observed a moratorium on such missile launches since late 2017, when in late November that year his armed forces tested a new type of ICBM, the Hwasong-15, capable of transporting “an extra-large heavy warhead” capable of striking the entire continental United States.
