The first big forest fire of the year ravaged 1,000 hectares in the Pyrénées-Orientales, between Banyuls-sur-Mer and Cerbère. On the morning of April 17, the fire was brought under control, but not extinguished. 90 firefighters are still mobilized.
On hundreds of hectares on the mountainside, all around Cerbère (Pyrénées-Orientales), there is nothing left after the passage of the fire. The biggest fire since the start of the year is now under control, but it remains under close surveillance, with helicopters to detect any new flames and hundreds of firefighters on the ground. The mission of the firefighters, from now on, is to prevent the fire from resurfacing, and this requires identifying the places where the land is still smoking.
Historic drought
Each smoking hole is treated with the utmost care. 1,000 hectares have burned since the start of the fire, Sunday April 16 in the morning. In the area hit by a historic drought, the flames were fanned by a north wind, gusts of more than 100 km / h. The fire, which started in the Pyrénées-Orientales, spread to the other side of the border, in Spain, where dozens of hectares also went up in smoke. The situation is now under control, and in Cerbère, the inhabitants are relieved.
