The flames still seem out of control in Gironde, on the evening of Sunday July 17. The situation has deteriorated over the past few hours. The La Teste-de-Buch fire is getting dangerously close to the beaches of Biscarrosse, in the Landes.

The flames and a huge cloud of smoke invaded the Lagune beach in La Teste-de-Buch (Gironde), Sunday July 17. From the boats, vacationers film the forest burning before their eyes. Flames several meters high are concealed by smoke. Suddenly, several Canadairs come to refuel, only a few meters from the swimmers. In an attempt to stop the fire, the planes sink into the black smoke. They have to face a wall of fire, which progresses very quickly.

The fire at La Teste-de-Buch (Gironde) resumed its progress in the afternoon. “The fire jumped the departmental road, arrived in five minutes, and while the wind was contrary, suddenly began to descend towards the South. At one point, flames more than 100 m high over a length of 1 km“, reports Ronan Léaustic, sub-prefect of Arcachon (Gironde). 70 km away, in the Landiras area (Gironde), the fire is still progressing. Firefighters fought all night against the flames. The fight is repeated tirelessly, they are relentless against the hearths which continue to multiply. In the neighboring towns, the inhabitants follow the progress of the fire, worried that they too will soon have to evacuate.
