the films of David Cronenberg, James Gray and Claire Denis among the 18 films in competition

A total of 18 films have been announced for the most prestigious film competition in the world, including that of Valeria Bruni Tedeschi French side, with Almond trees, a film on the theater and in particular on the director Patrice Chéreau. Also in the running for the Palme d’Or: David Cronenbert, James Gray, the Dardenne brothers or even Ruben Östlund.

David Cronenberg will present The crimes of the future with an enticing poster bringing together Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. The Dardenne Brothers return to Cannes with Tori and Lokita. James Gray will deliver a chronicle of adolescence, with Anne Hattaway and Anthony Hopkins. Ruben Ostlund, after the much noticed The Square, will climb the steps with The Triangle of Sadness. “A great general mockery of what we have become”summarizes Thierry Frémeaux.

We will also find the great South Korean director Park Chan-wook with Haeojil Gyeolsim (il won the Grand Prix du Festival in 2004 with Oldboy).

Among the other films in competition: Top Gun: Maverick by Joseph Kosinski, and Elvis by Baz Luhrmann.

Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov, who left his country and now lives in Berlin, will be in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May with a historical film about the composer Tchaikovsky: Tchaikovsky’s Wife. The director, for the third time in competition (Leto, Petrov Fever)is also a director and will open the Festival d’Avignon in July after having recently left Russia to settle in Berlin.

Z (Like Z)a zombie film directed by Michel Hazanavicius with Bérénice Bejo and Romain Duris, will open the Festival.

In the Cannes Première selection, Rachid Bouchareb directs a film around the death of Malik Oussekine: Our Brothers.

“The composition of the juries will be announced in the coming days”specified Thierry Frémeaux, indicating that “all this is not over”. The poster will also be unveiled in the coming days.
