Gad Elmaleh is certainly one of the most famous French comedians and actors in France! However, 25 years ago, the 51-year-old made a choice he has long regretted and which could have put a stop to his career… At least that’s what he confided during his last participation in the “PAUSE” podcast.
Long before the films “Chouchou” (2003) and Coco (2009), when he was still starting out in the industry and presenting his first one-man show at the theatre, Gad Elmaleh received two role proposals for two very different feature films. “XXL”, with Gérard Depardieu or “The truth if I lie! “, “a little film with a complicated title”, says Gad to himself, who thus chooses the first proposal!
“Me, wrongly, I say to myself, I have 20 and a few ballets, I am told: ‘You are going to shoot with Depardieu’, I thought it was going to be a crazy success”he remembered… Unfortunately, the success is not there. “The film has 4 entries”, then jokes the father of Noah and Raphael.
Fortunately, a few months later, the producers of “The truth if I lie” offer the actor to play in the second part. A role he accepts by playing “Dos”, played by Vincent Elbaz in the first opus. A real springboard for the actor who still remembers the enthusiasm aroused by this film: “Wherever you go, they call you Dov. I find success having to go on stage every night,” says the actor. A feeling to which Gad Elmaleh is now accustomed a quarter of a century later!
