Tuesday, September 13, 750 firefighters are still mobilized to try to put out the fires in Gironde. They have not succeeded in slowing the progression of the flames which affect the municipalities of Saumos and Sainte-Hélène. More than 3,200 hectares have already been devastated.
The flames, ten meters high, reached the tops of the trees. The forest disappears and is consumed. The blaze seems impossible to extinguish, favored by parched vegetation and temperatures of more than 30 degrees. “We see that the power of the fire compared to the black smoke is taking, it’s a recovery”says Éric Pitault, communications officer for SDIS 33.
Faced with this monster of fire, firefighters arrive as reinforcements from all over the country. There are 750 men on the ground supported by air assets: 4 canadairs and 2 water bomber helicopters. The fight is concentrated in two areas: Saumos and Vendays-Montalivet (Gironde). Last night, the fight was already fierce. Despite everything, four houses burned down in Saumos. An investigation should determine the origin of the fire. The criminal track is privileged.
