Global warming causes chain reactions that cause the temperature to rise. These are called “feedback loops”.
This is one of the regions where global warming could get carried away. In the north of Russia, water oozes through all the pores of a land that has been frozen for several thousand years. This crater, caused by the thaw, releases buried treasures, such as bones of ancient mammoths, but also greenhouse gases, hitherto trapped underground. It is a perfect example of a vicious circle.
A hellish cycle
Global warming is causing permafrost, or frozen ground, to thaw and gradually turn into swamps. Gases escape, thus aggravating the warming. A hellish cycle called “feedback loop”. Researchers have identified 27 of these phenomena caused by global warming and helping to amplify it. Among them are forest fires. Rising temperatures are drying out the ground, causing more frequent fires. As it burns, vegetation releases CO2, which contributes to global warming, and so on.
