Liberal nurses demonstrated in several cities in France on Saturday February 17. The profession wants recognition of the arduousness of their work and is calling for an increase in prices, which have not been revised upwards since 2009.
For more than twelve hours a day, Charlotte, a liberal nurse, goes to see her patients. As soon as the treatment is finished for a retiree who has undergone cataract surgery, she cannot go on forever. In all, around forty patients wait for him every day. Located in a rural area, it covers nearly 200 kilometers every day. Regardless of the distance, each trip is paid 2.75 euros. An insufficient amount in his eyes. “It doesn’t keep up with inflation at all (…) to get by, I would have to see 80 patients per day“, she explains.
Revalorize the profession
She earns on average 2,500 euros per month. The prices of care have not been increased since 2009. However, fewer and fewer doctors are traveling, regrets Charlotte. Faced with medical deserts, some nurses are required to take care of more and more patients and pathologies. Without upgrading the profession, Charlotte leaves herself five years before leaving the profession.
