Paris 2024: fear of Parisian balconies collapsing during the Olympic opening ceremony
Paris 2024: fear of Parisian balconies collapsing during the Olympic opening ceremony – (France 2)
On July 26, 2024, the day of the spectacular opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, Parisian balconies will undoubtedly be crowded, and some risk giving way under the unusual weight.
Overlooking the Seine, like the basket at the theater, the Parisian balconies will offer a breathtaking view of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games (OG), on July 26. But observing certain traces of disrepair and cracks, are they really in a condition to welcome groups of spectators? In theory, balconies are built to support, for each square meter, 350 kilos, the equivalent of four people weighing 87.5 kilos. However, due to poor workmanship or carelessness, collapses are regular in France, with one per month on average. In the event of an accident, the entire co-ownership may be held responsible.
Not systematic checks
The checks are not systematic. The trustees want to send a letter of recommendation to all owners within the next few weeks. Haussmann buildings, typically Parisian, are not the only ones to watch out for. Collapses also affect more recent constructions, particularly concrete ones.
