On the menu for this annual evening held on the first Monday of May, a return to the emblematic looks of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. To honor the artist, the fashion elite brought out pieces from his old collections , particularly from Chanel. Penelope Cruz, a good friend of Lagerfeld, for example, walked the red carpet in a white Chanel couture dress from 1998. “It was difficult to choose from all the beautiful pieces he created. »

Actresses Penelope Cruz and Michaela Coel, tennis player Roger Federer and singer Dua Lipa presided over the gala this year. On the red carpet, Dua Lipa turned many heads. The artist wore a divine 1990s dress from the Chanel collection, with a renaissance-inspired cut. As the only jewel, or almost: a dazzling diamond around her neck, an exclusive Tiffany piece.

The references to Chanel created a certain uniformity that is rarely found at the Met Gala, as the themes each year allow creativity to shine. Some, however, stuck to the theme while adding a punchy personal touch. Among them, Alton Mason, the first black man to walk in a Chanel fashion show (in 2018). The model has decided to pay homage to the wedding dress, the centerpiece that closes the brand’s fashion shows, by wearing a daring set in white lace with a veil.

Doja Cat attracted a lot of attention with her look: a silver Oscar de la Renta dress, a white feather train, a hood adorned with cat ears, but above all…. facial prostheses giving him the look of a feline. A very literal tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette (Jared Leto, Lil Nas X and several others have also given a nod to the designer’s famous companion). “I don’t know what I’m looking forward to the most, because we’re not given any information about what’s going on inside,” Doja Cat told host Lala Anthony. The evening following the red carpet is indeed ultra-secret: it is not televised and no one can take photos or film inside the museum.

The evening allowed many personalities to parade through the entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and to talk about Karl Lagerfeld’s place in their lives with animators Lala Anthony, Derek Blasberg, Chloe Fineman and Emma Chamberlain. Lagerfeld has long led the Chanel house, but also the collections of Fendi, Chloé and Tommy Hilfiger, in addition to launching his own eponymous collection, becoming over the years one of the most renowned designers in the world. However, the choice of theme this year was not without turmoil, since some objected to the famous Karl Lagerfeld, genius designer, but also a controversial character. On the red carpet, everyone sang her praises, including rapper Cardi B, who wanted to pay tribute to her in several ways in her look signed Thom Browne: the flowers in the skirt, the black and white for the palette of colors, the black tie that the designer often wore and the cut that made direct reference to Chanel.

Florence Pugh attended the Met Gala for the very first time. A precious invitation to this great evening is an honor for many stars, who pay tens of thousands of dollars for a place at one of the gala tables, for the benefit of the museum foundation. The American actress wore a black and white creation by Valentino, with an imposing train, the neckline of which was adorned with a simple bow. On her head, the centerpiece: a tall, majestic headdress of black feathers.

“This year, I just wanted to feel glamorous,” said Kim Kardashian, one of the most anticipated stars each year during this big fashion evening. The businesswoman wore a Schiaparelli dress set with hundreds of real pearls. “Nothing is more Karl than pearls, like Chanel’s iconic pearls. “Kim Kardashian (in white) was present at the evening with her sisters, Kendall (in black) and Kylie Jenner (in red), respectively dressed in Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gauthier (of which she is the new muse).
