Meeting another audience

“When you are in a cathedral, there is a kind of serenity that settles in your soul. I have the same feeling when I go to a theater” confides Roberto Alagna who was born into a family of very religious Sicilian origin. So when his producer suggested that he come and sing in churches, the tenor found the idea brilliant but not only because he felt good there.

For Roberto Alagna, who sang at La Scala in Milan or at the Metropolitan in New York, it is also an opportunity to meet an audience who does not attend operas. “There is a possibility of bringing them in much more easily. It’s very simple, it’s not stuffy” he says.

The revolutionary song Bella ciao revisited

In this adventure full of spirituality, Roberto Alagna sings accompanied by Jean-Félix Lalanne on guitar and by Marek Ruszczyński on piano. The two artists with whom he released his last album. The tenor interprets religious texts like Our fatherworks from opera but also more well-known titles.

“I didn’t want to present a program that is aimed at an elite or a community. There, it affects everyone a little bit” explains the tenor. Indeed, on stage, Roberto Alagna revisits revolutionary Italian singing Bella ciao which celebrates the commitment of resistance fighters during the Second World War against German troops. “At the beginning, it is a Yiddish song, truly religious, which touches the soul” he recalls.
