The family of the girl from Granby, who died in 2019, is suing the Department of Youth Protection (DPJ) and the Val-des-Cerfs School Services Center for more than three million dollars.
The civil liability procedure should be formalized on Monday at the Granby courthouse.
The seven-year-old girl died of suffocation and was found naked and unconscious on the floor of her bedroom. The girl’s body had been completely wrapped in tape, including her face, by her father and stepmother, who wanted to immobilize her.
The father pleaded guilty and will spend four years in prison for having kidnapped the child. The stepmother was found guilty of unpremeditated murder and forcible confinement, then sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 13 years. However, she appealed the verdict and the sentence.
The DPJ was singled out for leaving the girl in the care of her father and stepmother despite several reports. In interview at To have tothe lawyer for the child’s mother and paternal grandmother, Me Valérie Assouline, accused the government agency of having shown “gross negligence”.
The school was also “in the know about everything that was going on” and its officials still sent the child home so that her family could homeschool her, even though she expressed that there was violence, confided in April Me Assouline, who already announced that she intended to file a civil liability lawsuit.
The family and Me Assouline will speak on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Hôtel Castel in Granby. Contacted Sunday evening by The dutyMe Assouline replied that he wanted to wait for the press conference to comment on the file.
