A police officer died in the Alpes-Maritimes on Monday, August 26, after refusing to comply. On video surveillance images revealed by France 2, we see the driver, who was drunk, swerving before hitting the soldier. On Wednesday, his family and colleagues gathered to pay tribute and express their anger.

CCTV footage is at the heart of the investigations into the death of Warrant Officer Éric Comyn, which occurred on Monday 26 August. It first shows a routine traffic check on a road in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes). Two police officers signal a driver to pull over from the middle of the road. A motorist driving in the left lane then swerves to the right and hits the victim head-on. The police officer is thrown several metres.

The rest of the video shows the black sedan brushing past two other soldiers and heading towards the motorway. During his police custody, the man pleaded accident. He was drunk at the time of the incident and allegedly fled in a panic. “He claims not to have seen the policeman on the road”we can read in the press release from the Grasse prosecutor’s office. Aged 39, the alleged driver was brought before Grasse on Wednesday afternoon. He could be charged in the coming hours. In the morning, Éric Comyn’s colleagues and family came to pay tribute to him. His wife expressed her anger. “France killed my husband”she said.
