Emerging from the controversy, the general secretary of the teachers’ union has no illusions: the “road map” will remain that of Emmanuel Macron, whoever the minister is.

“The false start was nevertheless significant and shook the entire profession, rightly so, including even the parents of students”, reacted Monday January 15 on franceinfo Élisabeth Allain-Moreno, elected secretary general of SE-Unsa, after the comments of the new Minister of Education Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. The latter receives the unions on Monday while she finds herself at the heart of a controversy surrounding the education of her children in the private sector.

“We need a minister who quickly gets to grips with issues, but who above all re-establishes trust and who, for the moment, has got off to a very bad start,” estimated the teachers’ representative. Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said “regret having hurt certain teachers”. It’s a start, according to Élisabeth Allain-Moreno, but “That will not erase the comments. I think the minister will have to show her attachment to public and secular schools.”

She calls on the minister to take action to improve reception conditions in public schools: “She is now in the right place to be able to do this and make decisions as quickly as possible to improve the situation of schools today in France”, she says. But she has no illusions: “We must all remain aware that the road map that the new minister will continue to roll out will be the one that Gabriel Attal, Pap Ndiaye, and Jean-Michel Blanquer rolled out, since it remains Emmanuel Macron’s road map in matters of of educational policy”she explained.
