On Wednesday, the city of Beaune, in Côte-d’Or, is preparing to receive Angela Merkel, who continues her farewell tour. The Chancellor will step down from power in a few weeks, after 16 years as head of Germany.
Angela Merkel will complete her farewell tour in France, in Beaune (Côte-d’Or), Wednesday, November 3. Emmanuel Macron invited the German Chancellor to visit the city’s hospices, an architectural gem famous for its Burgundy and colorful roofs. The two heads of state also planned to stroll through the city, which has been preparing for this historic reception for several days. “I find that very good for Beaune, it will make people talk about the city, make us known a little”, enthuses a trader.
Beaune was not chosen at random, since 50,000 Germans go there each year. Quite a symbol, when you know the Chancellor’s enthusiasm for wine. German tourists share the same taste. “I think she loves French life and wine like us”, they confide. Another symbol, François Mitterrand had invited Chancellor Helmut Kohl 28 years ago to the Burgundy city, for a Franco-German summit. After 16 years in power, Angela Merkel will therefore share a last personal moment with a French head of state.
