A new important step has been taken towards the autonomy of Corsica. The government and local elected officials reached an agreement on the night of March 11 to 12.

Two years after being mentioned by the government, the autonomy of Corsica appears on the front page of the local press, Tuesday March 12. The Minister of the Interior and local elected officials have just agreed on a text which recognizes the specific interests of the Isle of Beauty. “We will perhaps have better control over what is happening, over the work, over transport perhaps too”, hopes a passerby. Thanks to this status, Corsica could in fact adapt certain national laws to the specificities of the island.

No resident status

The text, however, does not provide for resident status, as requested by nationalist elected officials, nor does it provide for recognition of the Corsican language. Despite last night’s decisive progress, the road to Corsica’s autonomy is still long. The text must still be voted on by the assembly of Corsica, then by Parliament. If all these institutions validate it, the President of the Republic will then be able to initiate a reform of the Constitution.
