The Netherlands and Belgium have chosen to work together for more than 30 years, particularly with regard to mine clearance. Both countries use the same equipment and have even founded a joint training school.
They operate alongside major military defences. Renowned in mine clearance, Belgium and the Netherlands have been working together for more than 30 years. In Ostend (Belgium)the mine warfare school is now the only common training facility for the two countries. Here, we consider high-intensity scenarios and the speakers discuss and share their knowledge. “Everyone comes here with their own culture and it’s no problem whether you’re Belgian, Dutch or something else. We all have the same goal”says Ralph Klinkercommander of the Vlaardingen.
Sailors from both countries familiarize themselves with the same technologies. Military cooperation takes place on a daily basis between several nations but Belgium and the Netherlands have taken a step forward for their navy. They place orders together in order to obtain the same ships and the same equipment. Most Belgians being Dutch-speaking, there is no language barrier when collaborating. On the other hand, each government is free to use its forces according to its strategic interests.
