The ex-husband of Chahinez Daoud, burned alive in 2021 in Mérignac near Bordeaux, was referred to the Gironde Assize Court for murder, Agence Radio France learned on Friday March 8 from the Bordeaux prosecutor’s office, confirming information from AFP. The trial date is not yet known.

Chahinez Daoud, 31, mother of three children, was burned alive on May 4, 2021, in Mérignac. The main suspect in this case is her ex-partner against whom she had filed several complaints, including one for violence a month and a half earlier. Her ex-husband had already been sentenced to prison for domestic violence. This femicide had become the symbol of the failures of the fight against violence against women.

The affair led the government to launch an inspection mission on the conditions of release and monitoring of the ex-husband. She had noted a series of “failures”, while an investigation by the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) pointed to mistakes and errors of assessment. The complaint filed by the victim had, for example, been incorrectly recorded. Five police officers were subject to disciplinary sanctions, including the departmental police director of Gironde and the Mérignac commissioner in office at the time.
