Ukraine: the European Union opens the way to accession – (franceinfo)
Despite threats of blockage from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the 27 European countries managed to reach an agreement on Thursday, December 14 in Brussels (Belgium): negotiations are possible for Ukraine to join the European Union.
For this first day of the European summit in Brussels (Belgium), we are already seeing a major decision: negotiations will be opened for Ukrainian accession to the European Union. Charles Michel, President of the Council of the European Union, emphasizes the historical aspect of the decision: “It is a historic moment which shows the credibility of the European Union, the strength of the European Union”.
Hungary abstains from vote
The accession of a country to the European Union requires the unanimity of the Member States: no opposition was expressed during the vote. However, the outcome of the vote was threatened by the opposition of Hungary and its Prime Minister Viktor Orban: they ultimately abstained. For his part, Emmanuel Macron wanted to reiterate his support for Ukraine.
